How To Change A Garage Code

If you think someone knows the code to open your garage door or your remote has been stolen, it is time to change the code on your garage door opener. Newer garage door openers have a keypad in addition to the remote, which makes it slightly easier to change the code. If you have an older garage door that is only operated by a remote, you must physically move the switches inside the remote and door opener to change the code.

Traffic, Parking & Transportation Department > Permits > Resident Parking Permit > Garage Location Information Garage Location Information To be eligible for a City of Cambridge Resident Parking Permit, your vehicle must have a Cambridge garage code as listed on the record for your vehicle in the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles database. You may want to check this information to ensure we can approve your request for a permit if you have recently moved into Cambridge or changed the address at which your vehicle was registered. To determine whether your garage code is Cambridge see item 5, place of principal garaging, on the Coverage Selection Page your insurance agent sent you when you renewed your vehicle insurance or call your insurance agent. If you need to change your residential address or place of principal garaging, call your insurance agent or the Registry of Motor Vehicles at 368-8000 or visit your local Registry Office. The RMV charges a $25 fee to make this change. We periodically compare our records of vehicles with Resident Parking Permits with the RMV’s list of principal garaging (garage code). We cancel permits for cars that are no longer garaged in Cambridge according to the RMV. Visit our Resident Parking Permit web page for information about eligibility, fees and how to apply.

The Linear series of garage door operators uses the model MDTK keypad, part number DNT00058. This keypad has no memory, and acts only as a transmitter. In order to change the keypad code, you must erase the memory in the LDO/LSO/LCO. If you will look at the upper right hand corner of the left hand side of the LDO/LSO/LCO, you will see the learn button. Simply press and hold this button for 10 seconds or more. When you release the learn button, the red LED above the button will blink 3 times and then come on bright for 15 seconds. When the LED goes out, the memory in the operator is erased. To learn in a new keypad code, press and release the learn button. The LED will come on for 15 seconds. While the LED is on, go to your keypad and enter your desired code (1 to 6 digits long) and press start/stop on the keypad. The LED will blink to indicate receipt of the new code. You will also have to reenter all of your hand held remotes into the memory. Again, simply press and release the learn button. When the LED comes on, press the button on the remote you wish to use. Repeat for any additional remotes. If you hold the learn button down for 10 seconds or more, you will have to start over, since the memory will be erased again.

I just moved into a new home, and the previous owners didn’t tell us the code to the garage door, and I haven’t been able to contact them. If I could change the code and set up my own code, that would be incredibly helpful. I will continue to refer back to your steps so that I make sure I get it set up properly.

This keyless garage door opener entry pad works with Genie transmitters using 390 MHz frequency. It is NOT compatible with Genie Intellicode transmitters (if your keypad has Intellicode printed on the cover, go to the next set of programming instructions below). The Door Code in the Step-By-Step Procedure at right is determined by the internal code switches inside your transmitter and the accompanying chart. Determine the settings of the first 3 switches and write down the corresponding number from the chart. Continue with the next 3 switches and its corresponding number, and so on, until the last set of 3 switches. You should have 3 or 4 Door Code numbers.

Recently my garage door code hasn’t been working all the time. Sometimes it seems to work, but then others it takes three or four trys. I would really like to be able to reset the code so that it worked a bit more efficiently. It sounds like resetting it is a fairly simple process and all that I need to do switch a few things on the remote control. I am just concerned that it might not work even after changing the code, so I will be sure to check the switches, and if it still doesn’t work, I might need to get something repaired.

Hi Rhonda. Do you mean the keypad on the outside of your garage door? If so, you’ll need to find the owners manual for your particular garage door opener (usually can find this online) and then reprogram the code. Sometimes, if you hold down the * and # keys together at the same time for about 6 seconds til it starts to blink on the keypad, this will reset the keypad to the original setting (this is how it works on the Chamberlain Clicker universal models). But it will vary from what you’ll need to do after this for your model. I’d start with finding that manual first online and then going from there. Best to you!

These transmitters work by matching the settings on the internal code setting switches with the same set of switches in the receiver on the garage ceiling. The receiver is located either behind the light lens of the Genie garage door opener motor head, or inside an external small rectangular box on the ceiling, which is connected to the motor head by a set of wires. Note: the frequency of the transmitter must be the same frequency as the receiver on the ceiling for it to work. Genie has been making the 390 MHz frequency exclusively for the last 15 years.

Hi Paul. Wow – I’ve always wondered if this could happen. Guess so! From reading about others with a similar problem online, it seems that your neighbor may have an older garage door opener OR it is something to do with dip switches that need to be changed on the garage door opener. Since this is such an odd issue, I would definitely call a garage door expert to get the best answer.

How do I clear the code in the remote control? My remote will open my neighbor’s garage door. I have reset my opener and reprogrammed it to my remote, but it still opens his door and mine. The neighbor is not available to reprogram his opener, so I would like to clear my opener and my remote so I can start from scratch. Thanks, Paul
